Transitional Living Program in Kansas City
A transitional living nonprofit was engineering real transformation. The brand was ready to tell that story.
The Problem
Some people think homelessness is solved by a shelter and a meal. That assumption is what was limiting Hillcrest Hope. As a transitional living program in Clay County, they operate on fundamentally different logic: combining free housing with case management, financial coaching, life skills education, and long-term graduate support to help unhoused individuals become genuinely self-sufficient. They were engineering transformation. The brand just hadn’t been telling that story.
The People
We built their strategy around a layered audience reality: Hillcrest Hope needs to move three very different groups: donors, volunteers, and residents. The donors giving to legacy and accountability. The volunteers seeking purpose and connection. The residents rebuilding from the ground up. Each group needed to feel seen differently, but the brand needed to speak with one voice. That tension, one mission, many humans, shaped everything.
The Heartbeat
The idea that drives the brand operating system.
Plant hope. Cultivate potential. Grow resilience.
Growing an organization and helping people rebuild their lives are both processes that take time and intention. The phrases of this Heartbeat clarify how Hillcrest Hope makes decisions, builds culture, invests in each other. And how they walk alongside residents every day. It’s an approach that’s active, nurturing, deliberate, and moves people forward with strength and hope.
HeartbeatValues
How the Heartbeat gets operationalized
01
The Journey is Better Together
No one has to go it alone. There is strength in numbers; wisdom in collective experience; joy in community. We support when needed, and commit to walking alongside others on their journeys.
02
Context Matters
We’re all at different places in life, and the stories of how we got here are different, too. We look at the big picture & seek to understand where you’re coming from so we know better how to serve & support you.
03
I See You
You are not your circumstances. We see & celebrate you as a whole person with value, uniqueness, strengths, and possibility.
04
Bridge the Gap
In our communication, relationship building, and the tools and programs we offer, we actively seek out ways to connect to others, overcome obstacles, and help those around us get to where they want to go.
Deliverables
The story and the strategy invite donors, volunteers, and staff into something far more meaningful than a mere transaction. It reframes viewing situation into potential; a charitable act into creating dignified agency; rescue into restoration. That’s what Hillcrest Hope has always done – now they know how to say it clearly.
Brand Strategy
A Human-First Brand Blueprint built around a layered audience reality — donors, volunteers, and residents — unified by one Heartbeat: Plant hope. Cultivate potential. Grow resilience.
Visual Identity
A refreshed identity system that carries the warmth and dignity of the mission through the brand book and every touchpoint.
Campaign Creative & Collateral
Story-driven creative and collateral that equips the team to engage donors, volunteers, partners, and the community.
Brand Book
“
Working with Guild Collective was transformational for Hillcrest Hope. Like many nonprofits, we’re often so focused on the work in front of us that it’s difficult to see the forest for the trees. Guild helped us articulate who we are, refine how we tell our story, and develop a clear framework for communicating our mission and impact. They helped us find our voice. The Blueprint and Heartbeat have become valuable tools that continue to guide how we engage donors, volunteers, partners, and the community.”
Will Patterson, Director of Development, Hillcrest Hope
